A “typical” Nike Ajax installation, site NY-09 contained three underground missile magazines and a dozen launchers. The base became operational during 1955 and remained under Regular Army command until 1960 when the New York Army National Guard took command of the site. NY-09 was one of several New York area Nike sites that were not converted to use the larger and more powerful, second-generation Nike Hercules missiles. It remained in operation through 1963.
